What came immediately to my mind was the Colorful Seasons set and Seasonal Layers dies - because of the deck chair die:

To me, a deck chair reminds me of the beach so I started my layout with this embellishment. The second thought I had was to use some paper on my card, and what better paper pack but the Come Sail Away pack:

My struggle was finding a strip that would work with the deck chair. I have used up most of this paper pack but when I found some of the navy stripe paper I decided that work work. 

Tip: did you know that if you diecut a second chair, turned it over and cut off the chair back, you have a beach table to match? And of course the table needs some cool drinks on it to beat that beach heat. 

So I decided that to add a tiny pop of color I would use two bright ink colors (Melon Mambo and Call Me Clover) to add one final element. 

Rather than stamp my phrase I decided to feature it by making it a circle layer to complete my card. Here it is:

An unusual way to use beautiful designer paper

In today's video tutorial, I am going to show you how to create a Perennial Birthday wreath card and you can adapt my idea for any kind of occasion that you need. 

This card idea is perfect if you have lots of leftover designer paper that you want to use up - just make sure when you choose a sheet that you like the patterns and colors on both sides - you will see why in a bit. 

For my card phrase,  I chose a stamp from the Perennial Birthday set - I like the font but also the size of this phrase. When choosing an image to stamp, make sure it matches the size of the other elements on your card. If you want the phrase to be the focal point, then it should be the biggest visual point on your card. On the other hand, if I had chosen a phrase that was really small, it wouldn't be noticed and would seem out of place compared to the size of the wreath.

I chose the Garden Lane designer series paper because of the patterns on both side - I felt they complemented each other and match the feminine birthday 'vibe' I was trying to create.

If you want to recreate this card at home, another tip is to cut all the paper, lay it out and then slip each square out, add adhesive and then slip it back in so that you keep the shape of the wreath intact. Watch my video below, to see how I did this and for other tips along the way. 

On my card photo above, I used my retired Metallics assorted sequins, but these are no longer available to order. If you have been following my blog for a while you will recall that my New Year's resolution is to use up what I have before ordering new embellishments. But below and on my video, I offer another embellishment suggestion that would also work beautifully.

How to scrapbook like a boss

Scrapbooking doesn't have to be complicated to be fun and in just a few steps you can create a beautiful page and have everyone convinced you are a scrapbooking boss!

Here's how I created the page below. Follow my steps and be prepared at what you will create.

Step one: Choose your designer paper and let it be your color and style guide.  

For my page, I chose Magnolia Lane: I love the colors and patterns.

Step two: Choose your main page layout color. Pick one of the colors in your designer paper.

Step three: cut one strip of designer paper 12" x 2". Cut a second pattern 5" x 7".

Step four: adhere both designer strips to your page (see page photo below).

Step five: Cut three photo mats 5 1/2" x 3 1/2". Pick a photo mat color that coordinates with your designer paper.

What to do with this unusual card map challenge: week 2

Last week's Paper Craft Crew challenge is a fun one: Case the Designer! I am not sure you know this but the Paper Craft Crew has 15 crew members. And this is a 2-week challenge so I thought it would be fun to choose another crew member and case one of their cards. 

Do you know what 'case' means? Copy And Steal/Share Everything. I had such fun looking through everyone's blogs for an idea that caught my eye. 

Here are two Perennial Essence cards that I chose to 'case', from Rick's blog:

These are clean and simple card ideas that take only seconds to create. I own the same paper pack but decided that I would copy Rick's layout but use other paper instead - the Follow Your Art paper that is gathering dust in my crafting closet (gasp)!

How to add subtle details to perfect your cards

In today's card and video tutorial I am going to use the Daisy Lane bundle (page 23 Annual Catalog) to make a beautiful greeting card. I will also show you how to combine products and layers to add some sophistication to your card.

I love bundles because they save me money (yay, always good) and are put together to support my creativity. The punch is perfectly matched to fit the smaller daisy in this set which saves me time when crafting. 

There is a second product I used on my card which I am delighted that I own - it just arrived recently and I can tell that I will be using it a lot: the Subtle 3D embossing folder:

The reason this folder is a must-have is that it will add that final sophisticated touch to layers that might seem too plain otherwise. It is Saturday and I barely feel like moving - have you ever had a day like this? I bet you have so I thought it would be fun to share a card idea that matches my mood.

The Back on your Feet stamp set is perfect for those who are a little under the weather. It's sure to make them smile! And I bet using this set will make you smile too.

This set is even more appropriate for me as I had a bike accident last week and broke a bone in my hand, making crafting very painful to do. 

I am stuck with this brace for the next five weeks, and when I have it off to shower, I am actually relieved to put it back on to relieve the pain. Darned if I do, darned if I don't situation.

Instructions:

1. Emboss the Old Olive Card base with Layered Leaves embossing folder.
2. Stamp Sloth on Whisper White Scrap using Memento ink.  Color using the blends listed above.
3. Stamp your “sigh” on stamped layer. Stamp inside of card with “sometimes that is all there is to say….” Using Memento Ink.
4. Using Die Cutting Machine and the Stitched Nested Framelits, cut the Sloth layer as well as a Terracotta Tile layer, cut the Terracotta Layer in half and adhere to back of Stamped layer using Snail.
5. Cut the linen portion of the Scalloped Ribbon away.  Tie in a bow, and carefully unravel.  Adhere using a Glue Dot.  Adhere the scallops to the bottom of the stamped layer.
6. Adhere to card base using dimensionals.
7. Adhere 1” x 5” Terracotta Tile to the bottom inside of note card.
8. Stamp your envelope to match.

Every little kindness makes the world a little brighter

This stamp set phrase is so true, isn't it? And it is certainly worth featuring on a card too. So I did. 

But, first I started with my paper choices and card stock layer and card base. Right now I am pretty much in love with the Garden Lane paper, no wonder why.

It is more, for me, about the paper designs rather than the greens, but maybe they work so well hand in hand. So I chose two designs to match together and layered each onto a larger piece of Mossy Meadow.

Then to make my Waterfront phrase stand out and to also match the pattern in one of the papers, I created two squares in a diamond layer.

Measurements:  

• Pear Pizzazz: 8 1/2” x 5 1/2”
• Whisper White: 2” square
• Garden Lane - two designs each: 3 7/8” x 2 1/2” 
• Mossy Meadow: 5 1/4” x 4”; 2 1/2” square
• Magnolia Lane ribbon: 4 1/2” strip

 

Instructions:

1. Fold Pear Pizzazz cardstock in half to create card base.
2. Using SNAIL adhesive, attach two pieces of Garden Lane paper to Mossy Meadow layer. 
3. Attach two strips of Tear and Tape adhesive to the back of Mossy Meadow layer. Peel off covers. Lay Magnolia Lane ribbon across center of card front and adhere to Tear & Tape on the back.
4. Using SNAIL, adhere Mossy Meadow layer to card base.
5. Ink phrase using Mossy Meadow ink and stamp onto Whisper White card stock. 
6. Using die-cutting machine and Stitched Shapes framelits, die-cut the two stitched squares: the Whisper White phrase (diamond layout) and Mossy Meadow, using two different sizes of rectangles. Adhere ‘diamonds’ together using SNAIL.
7. Adhere diamond layer to card front using Stampin’ Dimensionals.

I love the colors on this card: Night of Navy, Blueberry Bushel, Pacific Point and Balmy Blue. I don't own the Stitched Laces dies but didn't let that stop me. I decided to use an embossing folder instead: Tufted 3D. 

I kept everything else pretty much the same for my card but chose not to use Balmy Blue, mainly for space reasons. And because my embossed layers were pretty subtle, I added three Metallics Sequins for a touch of sparkle.

Think you know how to layer?

If you want create a card that looks super difficult to make, then you need to know how to layer to create that effect. What makes today's card really eye-catching is the Bird Ballad laser-cut cards:

The bird elements were cut (yes, with scissors) from the Mosaic Mood designer series paper, a fun and easy way to create card embellishments! Add a strip of Very Vanilla Scalloped Lace Trim tied in a lovely bow, a phrase banner, and the card is complete. 

Here's everything you need to know to make this card at home:

Supplies: 

Stamp Sets:  Bloom & Grow (149229)

Ink: Terra Cotta Tile (150086)

Cardstock: Terra Cotta Tile (150884), Very Vanilla (101650) 

Misc.: Mosaic Mood Specialty Designer Series Paper – DSP (149478), Die-Cutting Machine, Very Vanilla Scalloped Lace Trim (149593), Multipurpose Liquid Glue (110755), Bird Ballad Laser-Cut Cards & Tin (149595), Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals (144108), SNAIL Adhesive (104332)

Measurements:  

• Terra Cotta Tile: 5 ¼” x 4”
• Very Vanilla: 4 ½” x ¼” – for banner
• Lace Trim: 12”

 

Instructions:

1. Adhere Terra Cotta Tile piece to inside of laser-cut card using Liquid Glue. TIP: use small dots of glue all around the inside of laser-cut piece and then carefully lay down solid piece. Turn over and smooth with side of your hand to make sure it is adhered well.
2. Using Terra Cotta Tile ink stamp “forever starts today” and then flag each end to make a banner piece.
3. Adhere banner piece to card.
4. Tie Lace Trim around top layer of card and tie a bow on right-hand side. The top of the trim will be right under the stamped sentiment.
5. Carefully cut out two hummingbirds from DSP. You will want one with beak facing to the right and one with beak facing to the left.
6. Adhere right facing bird to card using SNAIL. Adhere left facing bird to card using Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals. Position so the beaks on both birds touch

How to feature bold designs on cards

For my card below, I chose the Garden Lane paper and used a larger piece as a card front layer. I love the combinations of greens in the designs; I think it is the first time Stampin' Up! has done this.

You can use any of the following colors to perfectly match: Garden Green, Old Olive, Mint Macaron, Pear Pizzazz, Mossy Meadow and Soft Sea Foam. How cool!

When making cards, think about how you can add unique, eye-catching elements. For my card I chose to use the Scalloped Tag Topper punch so that my phrase will stand out and be a free moving element on the card front:

I also decided to stamp my tag to add extra interest, using the lovely Verdant Garden stamp set. Then the phrase which I created using the Well-Written framelits.

How to create the perfect companion page

This week I made the perfect companion page to a recent Sailing Home scrapbook page that I posted a couple of weeks ago. I started with a matching Come Sail Away paper design and then chose a 12x12 sheet (Smoky Slate) as the base. 

I knew I wanted to use a phrase from the Sailing Home stamp set and decided to create a Smoky Slate banner to feature it:

Next, I added three photo mats: two are 4 1/8" x 6 1/8"; one is 3" x 3".

 

My final touch was to add some additional embellishments: three sailboats and two compass rose(s). What is the plural of compass rose anyway! I popped each embellishment up using a Stampin' Dimensional for added visual interest. 

The banner in the middle of my page is really for journaling. Once I add my photos and journaling I will then think about adding a touch of sparkle to my page, perhaps some white Basic Adhesive-backed Sequins?

How to let your paper be the main feature

In the past few days I have featured cards that have designer paper as its main focus and today I have another project that does the same. 

Today's card is another simple layout but the card is still a standout because of the paper patterns chosen. All pieces of paper come from the Mosaic Mood pack:

The colors in the paper are: Blushing Bride; Crushed Curry; Garden Green; Mint Macaron; Soft Suede; Terracotta Tile; Very Vanilla; and Whisper White. I love the two different neutrals so you can use the same design but with different neutrals and end up with something that looks quite different. 

The phrase on this card is from the Memorable Mosaic stamp set, a very unusual set indeed - BUT a perfect match with the paper designs:

Measurements:  

• Mint Macaron:  4-1/4” x 11” score at 5-1/2”
• Whisper White: 4" x 5-1/4" 
• Mosaic Mood DSP: (3 different prints) 4” x 2”, and two pieces 1” x 3”
• Soft Suede: Two pieces 1-1/8” x 3-1/8” and one piece 1-1/2” x 3-1/2”
• Mint Macaron Textile Ribbon: 5”

 

Instructions:

• Attach larger piece of Mosaic Mood Specialty Designer Series Paper to the lower edge of the Whisper White piece.
• Wrap ribbon around Whisper White piece at top of DSP layer and secure to the back with Snail Adhesive.
• Attach Whisper White layer on the card base with Snail.
• Attach the other two DSP pieces to the smaller Soft Suede pieces and attach to the card with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
• Attach gold Metallic Pearls to the DSP strips.
• Stamp sentiment on larger Soft Suede piece with VersaMark and sprinkle White Stampin’ Emboss Powder of the stamped image.  Pour off excess powder and heat emboss with the Heat Tool.
• Once the embossing has cooled use Timeless Label Punch to cut image out then pop label off card with Stampin’ Dimensionals.
